LAUPAHOEHOE FIRST ANNUAL FUN FEST!

  1. I was told that many of those who attended the "Fun Fest" were bused in from other charter schools. Is this true?

  2. Our laupahoehoe children that now attend other charter schools did come out. They were the volunteers for the FREE GAMES and FREE PRIZES and the FREE LUNCH and FREE ENTERTAINMENT were over 300 attended. We had other charter schools join our Ohana to show alliance and support for us. Were you there? I did not see a bus.

  3. sorry..."bused in" was really a metaphor for "bringing in by any transportation." I was simply surprised that as a community member, there were so few people I actually recognized, and was simply wondering what percentage of those who were there are actually planning on attending the school, or having their children attend. I had assumed that was the point of the event.

  4. It was advertised as a "Welcome and Information" event. The point was to let everyone know about the new charter school. I did see a lot of children there that now do attend LHES. The people in this community will have to make up their minds about where their kids will be educated. There has been a large number of neighbor children leaving LHES over the last decade, being "bused" out of town. A charter school's en-catchment area is the whole island.

  5. 200 registration forms were filled out at the event and there was one form per family. The event was open to the community, no restrictions & certainly no effort to bus anyone in. Frankly, I don't know why someone would start a rumor like that.

  6. I did attend the event and saw many familiar faces and many unfamiliar ones. I think if I saw only familiar ones, I would assume that the event had not been advertised outside of the community, which I believe it was. I did hear someone there say that this will be the only charter school between Hilo and Waimea. Since that is true, probably anyone interested in charter within that whole region, might have come to find out what it will offer.

    1. Yes! The current JumpStart Preschool will continue to operate on the LCPCS campus.

  8. Just want to clarify--that's the private preschool by the garden area? Does that mean that the DOE preschool will no longer operate?(Currently, there are two preschools. One is private, and one is a special education preschool)

  9. I believe Special Education was said to continue for all DOE students at the charter school. It needs to be clarified.

  10. It does indeed need to be clarified...I was told that the special education preschool did not have enough students to make it cost-effective for the 2012-2013 school year, but I wanted to make sure.

    1. I asked the question last night at the public board meeting. The answer is that the special education DOE preschool will continue to run if they can get the minimum enrollment number, which is only FOUR kids. This sounds very promising then. I would recommend getting in touch with Vicky Clifford. She is the schools Student Services Coordinator, and is managing the preschool program at LHES/LCPCS. The final count will be taken by the DOE sometime in August I believe, but if people inform her of there interest sooner rather than later, she can have a much better idea of how many are interested in participating and therefore, what the chances are for the program to run.
